Betches Love This: University of Michigan

The website Betches Love This is a popular, satirical website that emphasizes being rich, skinny, and desirable. In its piece on the University of Michigan it highlights Greek Life in ways that suggest that to be involved is to be a part of a more elite community: “While Michigan is too big of a school to say that “most” people are involved in greek life, it’s safe to say that anyone we care about is.”

This idea of being elite overlaps with some past sorority stereotypes we’ve discussed. It also serves as a possible explanation for such Greek Life backlash in the media. The majority of students in colleges are GDIs (God Damn Independents, or “geeds,” who did not go Greek*). Thus it is understandable that they would get fed up with less than 20% of their peers parading around declaring how much better they are. Perhaps this where the original sorority girl stereotypes truly lie.

* Yes, there is a negative connotation associated with this term.
